Russian Presidential poll to be held on March 18

Moscow, December 16: Russia is finally set for its next Presidential election. Upper house of Russian Parliament States has unanimously approved the chamber’s resolution setting the presidential election for March 18, 2018. Within next 5 days, the Federation Council’s resolution will be published paving the way for electoral campaigns of contestants.

Russia’s election commission expected the total number of candidates at the elections to be between 13 and 15. But a total of 23 people have announced their wish to run for president in the 2018 election. The head of the Central Elections Commission, noted that she expected the number of hopefuls to rise and at the same time expected the number of actual candidates to be much lower.

In last week, Russia’s current President Vladimir Putin has officially announced that he would run for next Presidential poll in 2018. During a meeting with workers at the country’s historic manufacturer, GAZ (Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod), in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod he announced the decision.

Russian President is one of the most popular leaders across the globe and has a long political career. Before serving as Russian President for the third term, he also served as Prime Minister of the country from 2008 to 2012. He also held He held the office of president for two terms from 2000 to 2008.

Russian TV journalist Ksenia Sobchak previously announced to run in Presidential poll. The main opposition leader, Alexei Navalny has already been restricted from contesting in the election due to a criminal conviction. As per opinion polls, Putin will easily win the election.
