Proud! Indian women wrestlers grabbed 20 medals including 9 gold in Commonwealth Wrestling Championship

Johannesburg, December 17: Indian women wrestlers continue to shine in the international sports arena and also further continue to make our country proud. Notably, Indian women wrestlers on Saturday bagged a whopping 20 medals, including 9 gold, on Day 2 of the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship at Johannesburg in South Africa.

 

Keeping up their dominance in the championship, Indian women wrestlers bagged 20 medals including 9 Gold, 7 Silver and 4 Bronze medals in all 10 weight Greco Roman categories. The team that won coveted yellow metal included Kiran in 72 kg division, Divya Kakran in 68 kg and Ritu Malik in 65 kg.

While Pooja claimed a Silver in 76 kg, while Ravita finished second in 59 kg. The Bronze was won by Kavita in 76 kg, and Manu Tomar in 72 kg. The FreeStyle bouts will be held on Sunday. Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik also bagged the gold medal in 62 Kg category.

Earlier, on Friday, the opening day of the tournament also saw a complete dominance of Indian men grapplers. Indian male wrestlers had swept the Greco-roman category by winning 10 Gold medals and as many Silver medals. The gold-winning male team included Haryana’s Rajender Kumar in 55 kg, Manish in 60 kg, while Naveen won gold in 130 kg. Besides that Prabhpal Singh won silver in 87 kg, while Sonu won in 130 kg.

Interestingly, India has fielded a 60-member contingent, including Sushil Kumar and Ritu Malik, for the Championship. Commonwealth Wrestling Championship is a tournament designed for top wrestlers in the Commonwealth of Nations. The first Commonwealth Wrestling Championship was held in Glasgow, Scotland. The South African Wrestling Federation (SAWF) is the hosting the 2017 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships at the Carnival City Big Top Arena in Brakpan, South Africa.
