London, December 2: The strengthened diplomacy of New Delhi has forced the whole world to support the India at the various International agencies including International Maritime Organisation, United Nations etc. Notably, it’s a proud moment for us and our country as India on Friday was re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) at an assembly of the body at its headquarters in London.

India was re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation during the 30th Assembly of IMO which is being held in London. Indian High Commissioner to the UK, YK Sinha represented India at the IMO where India secured the second-highest 144 number of votes from member-countries, just after Germany's 146 in the category B which are states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade.

Minister Nitin Gadkari while making an announcement on Twitter said, "Elated to share that India's campaign at highest level has ensured the seat at Category-B (States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade) of @IMOHQ council by securing 144 votes, 2nd after Germany(146). A proud moment for the country."

On the other side, the Indian High Commission in the UK tweeted, "India enters the IMO Council under category B having won 144 votes, the second highest in the category." Apart from India, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, United Arab Emirates are also elected in category B of International Maritime Organization.

Importantly, India has been one of the earliest members of the IMO, having ratified its convention and joined it as a member-state in the year 1959. India has been elected to the Council of the IMO ever since it started functioning, except for a two-year hiatus during 1983-1984.

The International Maritime Organization is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. The IMO Council plays a vital role in deciding various important matters within the mandate of the IMO, in relation to the global shipping industry and its work strategy and budget.
