Paris, December 20: The French Government is on the road which goes towards a green nation. It has passed a law which will ban Oil and Gas production and exploration by 2040. This decision has made France world’s first country to pass this kind of law.

The law passed is mostly for name sake as oil and gas produced in France accounts for just 1 percent of domestic consumption, the rest is imported.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted in this concern, saying in part: "Very proud that France has become the first country in the world today to ban any new oil exploration licenses with immediate effect and all oil extraction by 2040."

Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot said the law shows "current generations can take care of future generations."

The ban is part of a larger plan to wean the French economy from fossil fuels and to fulfil France's commitments under the Paris climate agreement to curb global warming.

French utilities company Engie agreed to ditch natural gas as a power source by 2050, opting instead for biogas and renewable hydrogen to fulfill its green goals. “We will progressively make our gas greener so that by 2050 it can be 100 percent green,” Chief Executive Isabelle Kocher told reporters. “Most of the energy consumed is for heating, cooling and transport. By massively deploying green gas we could decarbonize all that.”
