Incredible! Indian grapplers bagged 60 medals including 29 gold in Commonwealth Wrestling Championship

Johannesburg, December 20: Indian grapplers shined at the recently held Commonwealth Wrestling Championship and bagged a whopping total of 60 medals including 29 Gold. Notably, a 60-member Indian wrestling team participated in the championship including Sushil Kumar, Vinesh Phogat, Geeta Phogat and Sakshi Malik.

 

India Won 60 medals including 29 Gold at recently held Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. However, it was the comeback tournament for two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar and he didn’t disappoint Indians at all by winning the gold medal in men’s 74-kilogram freestyle category.

On the First day of Championship, India wiped the Greco Roman category by winning 10 gold medals and as many silver. Rajender Kumar in 55 kg category, Manish in 60 kg category, Gaurav Sharma in 63 kg category, Manish in 67 kg category, Aditya Kundu in 72 kg category, Gurpreet in 77 kg category, Harpreet in 82 kg category, Sunil in 87 kg category, Hardeep in 97 kg, Naveen in 130 kg category bagged gold medal and made whole country proud.

India won nine gold, seven silver and four bronze medals on the second day. Geeta Phogat made a Golden comeback after 1 year, besides her Olympics Medalist Sakshi Malik, Asian Champion Vinesh Phogat, Kiran (72 kg), Divya Kakran (68 kg) Seema (53), Ritu Phogat (50), Pooja Dhanda (57 Kg) and Ritu Malik (65 kg) also won Gold medal. 76 kg was the only event where Indian Failed to win a Gold medal, as Dressman (NGR) best both Indian Kavita and Pooja.


On Last Day of Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, Sushil Kumar returning to international wrestling after more than three years bagged a gold medal. He comfortably won all the 4 bouts. Sushil returned to the competitive wrestler in November at the Senior Nationals in Indore where he won a gold medal but that was amid controversy as he was given three walkovers from his fellow wrestlers.

The other gold medals in the freestyle category for India today were Utkarsh Kale (57kg), Sharvan (61kg), Bajrang (65kg), Amit Dhankar (70kg), Jitender (79kg), Deepak (86kg), Somveer (92kg), Rubaljeet Singh (97kg) and Hitender (125kg).

Interestingly, India fielded a 60-member contingent, including Sushil Kumar and Ritu Malik, for the Championship. Commonwealth Wrestling Championship is a tournament designed for top wrestlers in the Commonwealth of Nations. The first Commonwealth Wrestling Championship was held in Glasgow, Scotland. The South African Wrestling Federation (SAWF) is the hosting the 2017 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships at the Carnival City Big Top Arena in Brakpan, South Africa.
