NGT sends notices on virus giving ‘Bloody tears’ to Blue sheep in U’khand

Uttarkashi, December 22: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday sent a notice to the Central and Uttarakhand governments, seeking details of an unknown virus or disease reportedly spreading across the Gangotri National Park and infecting the wildlife.

 

Due to the unknown virus, eyes of the Himalayan blue sheep are popping out and bleeding, according to the petitioner, Advocate Gaurav Bansal. The Division Forest Officer of the Gangotri National Park sas also confirmed this.

Petitioner Gaurav Bansal had mentioned in his petition that a BSF expedition team led by assistant commandant Loveraj Singh Dharamshaktu spotted the infected sheep at Kedar Tal in September and informed wildlife officials about the disease.

Bansal has appealed to the green body for translocation of infected Himalayan blue sheep to some other safer places prevent the spread of the infection caused by the unknown virus-disease, and to take necessary measures to prevent and control expansion of unknown disease in GNP.

The Tribunal has issued notices to seven parties including Uttarakhand's Chief Secretary, State Wildlife Board, Principal Secretary, state Forest Ministry, Department of Forest, State bio-diversity Board, National Biodiversity Authority and Union Environment Ministry.

The case will be taken up in the Tribunal in February next year.
