Major blow to United Nations: Trump administration announces whopping $285M cut in UN budget

New York, December 25: The United States giving up a major blow to the United Nations on Sunday announced to reduce a budget of $285 million for the upcoming fiscal years. Notably, the United States is amongst those countries which fund huge amount to the United Nations and to its subsidiaries for a social cause etc.

 

Notably, the United States Mission to the United Nations announced that it negotiated a major reduction in the UN’s budget for the upcoming fiscal years. The US Ambassador to United Nation Niki Haley in a statement said that the 2018-2019 UN budget will have a $285 million reduction from the previous two years.

The statement further said, “In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key US priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system.”

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley further said that the budget cut announced on Sunday is a big step in the right direction for the United States. She also asserted on the ways to increase the UN’s efficiency while protecting interests of the US.

Nikki Haley said, “The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known.” “We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked. This historic reduction in spending, in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable UN and it is a big step in the right direction,” Nikki Haley added.

Importantly, right from the start, it was one of the Trump administration’s agenda has been to reduce the amount of contributions that the US makes to the UN. However, the move comes a days after almost all the UN members opposed President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Earlier in the month also, US President Trump suggested that US may cut off foreign aid to nations who voted for the UN resolution and Ambassador Haley said that the US would be taking names of all the countries.
