Lima, December 27: Ex-President of Peru Alberto Fujimori has asked the citizens of Peru to forgive him for his deeds. Fujimori was imprisoned on the grounds of human rights crimes. Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski pardoned him before completion of a 25-year prison sentence.

“I am aware that the results during my government on one side were well received. On the other hand, I recognize that I have also disappointed other fellow Peruvians. I ask them to forgive me with all my heart” says Fujimori through a video released on Facebook directly from the hospital he is admiited.

He is considered as a divisive figure in Peru. He is admired by some Peruvians for combating Maoist rebels, whereas his critics consider him a corrupt dictator. The presidential pardon comes just days after Fujimori's supporters in Congress helped Mr Kuczynski avoid impeachment over alleged corruption.

Still, many Peruvians and human rights activists continued to assail the pardon, which was announced on Sunday evening, three days after a legislative faction led by Kenji Fujimori denied Mr. Kuczynski’s foes the supermajority they needed to oust him.

Peruvians remain bitterly divided over Fujimori’s legacy. His supporters credit him with laying the foundations of the country’s robust, investor-friendly economy after it was sunk by massive hyperinflation. His supporters say he pacified the country, defeating the brutal Maoist Shining Path movement.
