Over 40 killed in deadly suicide attack at a Shia cultural centre in Kabul

Kabul, December 28: At least 40 people were killed and 30 wounded in a suicide attack at a Shia cultural centre and AVA news agency in Kabul city at about 10.30 am today. According to officials, women, children and journalists are among the dead.

The Interior Ministry said, the suicide blast was followed by two explosions in the area. The head of Afghan Press, the media branch of the Shia organisation, said dozens of bodies had been retrieved from the building and officials have reported dozens more being brought to hospitals.

The Afghan Presidential Palace also issued a statement via Twitter and said "Terrorist groups and their backers must know that the Afghan people are united and stand firm to any plot carried out by their enemies; these heinous attacks will not break the resolve of the Afghan people.

"The Afghan government reiterates that it is firmly committed to dismantle and eliminate terrorism; the Afghan Security Forces are in the front lines to safeguard their country and people."

In conclusion, the statement said President Ashraf Ghani has instructed authorities to fully investigate the attack and pay serious attention to the wounded and families of the victims.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, so far. The Taliban were meanwhile quick to distance themselves from the bombing and denied any involvement in the incident.
