Bali’s Mount Agung shows decline in volcanic activity but alert remains high amid fear of major eruption

Denpasar, December 4: After creating major havoc for two long weeks, Mount Agung seems calmer at the starting of this week. Mount Agung has shown a decline in volcanic activity. The disaster management agency of the country said the volcano is emitting only a thin column of sulphuric steam. But the residents of nearby areas have been said to remain vigilant.

Though the volcano is calmer outside, a lot of things are happening inside. "We have operated normally for two days, since Saturday. The airport is still taking some steps to anticipate (potential) volcanic activity," said Lombok International Airport general manager I Gusti Ngurah Ardita on Sunday.

The Volcano erupted in Bali for the first time in 54 years in September 2017. Then 140,000 people were forced to evacuate and the again were told to return as volcanic activity decreased in October. The volcano last erupted in 1963 killing nearly 1,600 people.

The island of Indonesia is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the region. Due to the volcanic eruption along with local residents, thousands of travelers including Indian nationals are stranded in Bali. Observing the situation, Consulate General of India in Bali issued a travel advisory on Sunday.
