New Delhi, December 4: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today files nomination for the election to the Congress' chief post. He was accompanied by senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"So far 90 nomination forms have been given out to state unit delegates. No application for the nomination has been submitted so far and Monday is the last date for filing nominations," the Central Election Committee said.

The road for Rahul Gandhi’s coronation will be further clear by today evening, for only in case of any challenger the votes may be cast by the party members and results will be declared on December 19.

Gandhi’s tipped elevation has also been a subject of criticism with BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the principal opposition party of lacking internal democracy.

Battling questions on the issue, Congress spokesperson and Lok Sabha MP Susmita Dev said there is full transparency in these polls as they are held as per rules prescribed by the Election Commission.

“There has been criticism on whether the Congress election is democratic or not. I would say that this is such an election which is being supervised by the Election Commission of India,” she said.

Dr Karan Singh, a senior Congress party leader said that the future of 'Congress' party under Rahul Gandhi's leadership is bright. He added that it's time for VP Rahul Gandhi to take over the command from his mother, Sonia Gandhi.

"A young generation is taking over, the future of Congress is bright," Dr Singh said.
