Maha, Gujarat braces up for #CycloneOckhi; Disaster Management eyes situation, alerts on

Mumbai, December 5: Cyclone Ockhi showered rains on Mumbai, city all braced up amidst heavy showers and hailstorms unitedly. Cyclone Ockhi heading towards Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi urged karyakartas to help needy people as the situation is being monitored continuously. Also Disaster Management team continuously monitoring the situation and updating people on Twitter.

 

Prime Minister tweeted saying that “continuously monitoring the situation arising in various parts of the country due to #CycloneOckhi. Spoke to all relevant authorities and officials. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected.” Further he added “with #CycloneOckhi expected to make a landfall in Gujarat, I appeal to @BJP4Gujarat Karyakartas to focus on helping people across the state. Our Karyakartas should devote themselves to providing all possible assistance and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens.”

 
 

High alert has been issued in Gujarat and Maharashtra due to Cyclone Ockhi. Sea conditions will remain rough to very rough along and off north Maharashtra and South Gujarat coasts till tomorrow, forecasted IMD.

 
 
National Disaster Management updated tweeting that light to moderate rainfall at most places in Maharashtra; isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over north Konkan during next 24 hours (Palghar, Thane, Raigarh, Greater Mumbai, Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar and Pune districts). 

The storm ‘Ockhi’ over Arabian sea moved further NNE wards & is now 480 km SSW of surat likely to continue to move NNE wards, weaken gradually and cross s Gujarat and North Maharashtra as a deep depression by tonight. Heavy rains and strong winds already started. Be careful & take precautions, tweeted Environment Minister Dr. Harash Vardhan.
 

 

Also National Disaster Management Authority said that light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places in Maharashtra, with isolated heavy rainfall over the North Konkan region, over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Mumbai sunk into the showers of Cyclone Ockhi; on Monday night Education Minister Vinod Tawade also alerted Mumbaikars saying that “Precautionary holiday declared for schools in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Sindhudurga, Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad and Palghar Districts for the safety of the students due to the serious weather predictions on #CycloneOckhi #MumbaiRains.”

Also on Monday Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took note of the damage caused by cyclone Ockhi that rocked south India. Sitharaman met the affected families of fishermen at Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram and assured that search and rescue operations by Indian Navy, Coastguard & Airforce will continue with full vigour.

Before Maharashtra, Cyclone Ockhi hit Lakshadweep islands shattering the roads and flooding them, today Indian Navy’s Sea King’s helicopter providing the relief material to the affected Lakshadweep & Minicoy Islands.

Cyclone Ockhi is the first tropical storm of the season that created havoc in the southern states of India. Many districts in South Kerala, Tamil Nadu and island group in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep has faced the ramshackle conditions.
