After touching hearts of millions, ‘Dangal’ wins the award for best Asian Film in Australian festival

Sydney, December 6: After touching the hearts of millions of viewers in India and across the world, “Dangal” film has been praised on the international stage too. The story of two struggling wrestlers against social oppression was filmed brilliantly in Dangal. Now, the movie on Wednesday has been named the Best Asian Film at the 7th Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.

Dangal is a 2016 Hindi-language biographical sports drama film, produced by and starring Aamir Khan, and directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The film is loosely based on the Phogat family, telling the story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler, who trains his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari to become India's first world-class female wrestlers.

The film touched several social issues. Various film critics lauded the filmmaking, storytelling of the film largely. All four actresses playing adult and child portrayal Geeta and Babita were strikingly good. Amir Khan’s acting was also largely praised. On the first day of its release, Dangal collected 29.8 crores on its opening day of release in India. Kashmiri actor Zaira Wasim, 17, who shot to fame with her portrayal of wrestler Geeta Phogat, received the national child award for exceptional achievement from President Ram Nath Kovind.

“The inaugural AACTA Award for Best Asian Film went to Aamir Khan-starring wrestling drama Dangal, a massive worldwide hit with over $300M at the box office,” a local report says. The jury panel was headed by Hollywood star Russel Crow.
