Brussels, December 8: After long days of drama, conflict, negotiations Britain and the European Union have reached a significant deal to progress the next step of Brexit talks. After overnight talks on the issue, British Prime Minister Theresa May reached Brussels on Friday morning to make a joint announcement with the President of EU, Jean-Claude Juncker. Juncker said, “sufficient progress” has been made paving the way for next phase of talk in the process.

Ireland Border issue:

The agreement mainly pertained to issues regarding citizenship, Irish Border, monitory cooperation. British PM said that the agreement ensured there would be “no hard border” between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and Belfast agreement will be upheld. But she also stood firm that constitutional and economic integrity of the United Kingdom would be preserved. Ireland also welcomed the decision. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said the latest deal was a "very good outcome for everyone on the island of Ireland".

Right of EU citizens:

The rights of EU citizens living in UK and UK citizens living in EU will be safeguarded. Their rights will remain same and the administration process will remain simple, cheap. Eight years after withdrawal, Britain can refer unclear cases of EU citizens to the European court of justice. There are three million citizens of the bloc in Britain and one million Britons in the union.

The difficult challenge is still ahead:

“While being satisfied with today’s agreement, which is obviously the personal success of Prime Minister Theresa May, let us remember that the most difficult challenge is still ahead,” the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk said. “We all know that breaking up is hard, but breaking up and building a new relation is much harder.”
