Notably, the Home Ministry with an aim to empower the families of martyred policemen of Jammu and Kashmir has announced to make a significant hike in ex-gratia of Rs 70 lakh.

Jammu and Kashmir police confirmed about the increase in the amount of ex-gratia for the families of martyred policemen on twitter saying, “Ministry of Home Affairs enhances its share of ex-gratia relief payable to NoKs of JK Police martyrs to Rs 30 lakh. NoKs of a JK Police martyr will get Rs 70 lakh.”

However, the reports had earlier said that MHA has decided to increase to compensation to families of policemen martyred in militant violence in Jammu and Kashmir and bring it at par with the paramilitary forces. The MHA sources said, "As against present ex-gratia relief of Rs 43 lakhs, the families of martyred policemen in J&K are likely to get a compensation of Rs 70 lakhs now."

“The MHA has recognized that J&K police has been at the forefront of anti-militancy operations in the State and has played a vital role in the killing of over 190 terrorists during “Operation All Out” in the Valley this year,” the official spokesperson added.

The MHA released the order that said, “Considering the long-pending demand for enhancement of ex-gratia and to make it (equal) to the relief being given to the CAPF in cases of death occurring in the course of performing duties attributable to act of violence by terrorists, anti-social elements, the matter has been considered in the Ministry and it has been decided to enhance the share of ex gratia in the state from the police welfare fund, MHA as well as the security-related expenditure (relief and rehabilitation).”

The order further said the MHA would make a payment of Rs 7 lakh in place of Rs 3 lakh to the next of kin of each J&K Police personnel from the police welfare fund. “The MHA will also make a payment of Rs 5 lakh in place of 2 lakh to the NoK of J&K Police personnel/SPOs as well as NoKs of CAPFs or Army posted in J&K. The expenditure is debatable under the security-related expenditure. The existing terms and conditions/guidelines for grant of ex gratia from the security-related expenditure of Rs 5 lakh in place of Rs 2 lakh would continue,” the order stated.

Importantly, over 30 policemen including some senior police officers were killed in various terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir this year.
