New York, December 8: Slavery, the heinous system which got officially abolished several years ago still prevails in some corners of the world. Libya, the North African country is witnessing this crime a large number of migrants gather there to reach Europe. In such a messy situation, migrants are being sold into slavery in Libya. United Nations Security Council condemned Libya slave auctions.
Underlining the need for all actors to cooperate with the Government of National Accord of Libya, including assisting the country to build capacity to secure its borders and end human trafficking, the Council urged ratification and implementation of international instruments that countered such trafficking by all Member States. The Council encouraged cooperation between the European Union, the African Union and the United Nations to protect the lives of migrants and refugees along migration routes, inside Libya in particular.
“The Security Council reaffirms its support for the United Nations’ Action Plan for Libya, reiterates its call for all Libyans to work together in a spirit of compromise in the inclusive political process facilitated by Special Representative of the Secretary‑General, Ghassan Salamé, and emphasizes that a stable Libya is the only way to help improve the living conditions of all people in Libya, including migrants,” Council President said.
