Nya Pyi Taw, December 8: Though Myanmar government has pledged quick return of Rohingya Muslims, the country has expressed its opposition against a resolution of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with regard to the Rakhine issue. On Thursday, the government hosted a meeting of delegates from the United Nations and foreign countries.

In last month, the country signed an agreement with its neighboring country Bangladesh on the repatriation issue of Bangladesh. A joint working group will be set up within 3 weeks by the signatory countries. As per UN estimation, more than 6.2 lakh Rohingyas have fled to neighboring Bangladesh.

Myanmar Permanent Representative to UN U Htin Lynn published an official statement in response to the UNHRC on Myanmar. “The draft resolution is focusing on a particular group of people belonging to a particular faith,” he said. “The promotion and protection of human rights should be for all people of the globe, irrespective of race, religion, and gender,” he added.

“Myanmar will continue to work relentlessly to address the challenges of Rakhine State with or without a resolution by the Human Rights Council,” the statement said. It also assured Myanmar’s effort to resolve the conflict both internally and through international co-operation.
