Evacuation of Indian nationals from hurricane-hit Sint Maarten is a priority for us: Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi, September 12: Leading from the front to evacuate all the Indian nationals from the hurricane-hit Caribbean island of Sint Maarten, the External Affairs Ministry has made all the necessary arrangements. Notably, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday said that the Indian government has arranged for the evacuation of Indian nationals from the hurricane-hit Caribbean island of Sint Maarten.

 

Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday tweeted saying, "The evacuation of Indian nationals from Sint Maarten is a priority for us.” She further said that the evacuation process was to begin today but the plane chartered for the purpose could not fly. "We are organizing another aircraft to carry out the operation," Minister Sushma added.


Sint Maarten, that is jointly administered by France and the Netherlands, was directly in Hurricane Irma's path. The island suffered widespread destruction after the storm made landfall last week and wreaked havoc on the Caribbean islands.


However, not only, Indians are being evacuated but also all the other countries are conducting evacuation process to safeguard their citizens. Due to Irma hurricane, the death toll has risen to four. Hurricane Irma lashed Sint Maarten badly damaging or destroying 70 percent of homes in the Dutch part of the Caribbean island.
