Darjeeling trying to bring back normalcy despite prevailing problems

Darjeeling, September 14: A long three months of unrest has now got into nerves of the local residents. After two all-party meets, till now no solution has been traced against the demand of a separate statehood for Gorkhas. But the people in misery are trying hard to get over the problem and bring back normalcy. After last all-party meet, some shops, schools are reopening.

30 professors from Darjeeling Government College have been returned to the hill. School students are going back to schools though they were not dressed in school uniform. Fearing any threat, guardians forbade them to wear uniforms.

The Mirik area is showing better traits of normality. On Wednesday for the first time, Government-aided educational institutions opened after the strike stuck the hill. Many shops and markets also remained open. In Darjeeling, Cursheong, Kalimpong, Mirik bus services were on.

"The government-aided schools opened for the first time today in the past three months. Most of these institutions were occupied by security personnel who have been shifted to other places. Teachers and non-teaching employees have started cleaning the premises of their respective schools and we hope classes will resume in a couple of days," Ashwini Kumar Roy, the subdivisional officer of Mirik, told a local newspaper.

To bring back smile to the hill, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee made some announcements. A tripartite meeting, normal ration in Darjeeling have been given priority. Official sources said the government is thinking to pay salary to some government departments.
