Korea SS Open: Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, Sameer Verma storms into quarterfinals round

Seoul, September 14: Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu and star shuttler Sameer Verma on Thursday registered an emphatic win over their opponents to progress into the quarter-finals at the Korea Super Series badminton tournament. However, Parupalli Kashyap bowed out of the tournament following a narrow defeat in the second round.

Rio Olympics silver medalist PV Sindhu defeated Thailand's Nitchaon Jindapol by 22-20, 21-17 to enter into quarterfinals. Sindhu will next face Japan's Minatsu Mitani. Earlier, Sindu emerged victorious over Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong by 21-13, 21-8 in the tournament. Japan's Minatsu Mitani, who was a bronze medallist at the 2014 World Championships and had also defeated Saina Nehwal in the finals to clinch the 2012 French Open.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong Super Series finalist and Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold winner, Sameer Verma registered an easy win over Hong Kong's Wong Wing Ki Vincent by 21-19, 21-13 in a match that lasted for only 41 minutes. He will next face local hot favourite Son Wan Ho. Earlier, in the tournament, Sameer registered a hard fought win over Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk by 21-13, 21-23, 21-9.

Unfortunately, Parupalli Kashyap was outclassed by local hot favourite Son Wan Ho. Son got better off the Indian by 21-16, 17-2, 21-16 to reach the last-eight stage in a match that lasted for an hour and 16 minutes. Sai Praneeth also goes down to World No. 12 Tzu Wei Wang who defeated Indian by 21-13, 26-24. In the Men’s doubles, the Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated World number 9 Taipei pair by 23-21, 16-21, 21-8 to storm into Quarter Finals.
