NGT denied lifting 10-year ban on diesel vehicles

New Delhi, September 14: On Thursday, denying on Centre's plea of making modification in ban orders, National Green Tribunal refused to lift the ban on 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR, talking on the decision NGT said that one diesel vehicle causes pollution equal to 24 petrol vehicles and 40 CNG vehicles.


 

The vehicular pollution causing the health risk for its population, looking at the rising pollution levels in Delhi and NCR, the Tribunals order had come in the wake. According to Delhi government’s website, Delhi’s registered vehicular population has reached to nearly three times to 7.6 million from 2.2 million in 1994. Vehicular pollution is considered to be a major source of air pollution in Delhi. As per Central Pollution Control Board, the vehicular pollution load in Delhi increased by nearly 50% in 1995-96 from 1990-91.

In November 2014 To tackle the increasing air pollution in Delhi, the Tribunal said that the diesel and petrol vehicles which were more than 15 years old would not be permitted to run on Delhi roads. After five months in April 2015, the tribunal again ordered that all diesel vehicles of more than 10 years old would not be given permission to run in Delhi. In July 2016 the Tribunal had directed Delhi government to cancel the registration of all diesel-powered vehicles which are over 10 years old. While in January 2017, looking at the effect of the ban on the weaker economic section, the centre moved to supreme court asking them to lift the ban of 10 years on diesel vehicles. In July 2017 NGT’s order to phase out diesel vehicles was challenged by the union government, saying there was no legal provision for the move described by a car maker as a "corporate death penalty" and on 14th September 2017 NGT refused to lift the ban on 10-yr-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR.
