To control ‘infant mortality’ rate, Tamil Nadu will provide contraceptive injections for women free of cost

Chennai, September 15: Being one of the populated states now Tamil Nadu will give ‘contraceptive injections’ to women belonging to the age group of 18-45 years. To bring the population menace under scrutiny and to adopt safety measures for birth control, Tamil Nadu will be giving ‘contraceptive injection’ once in every three months. 

Launching ‘Antara’ scheme for Women and Children, Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar said that once in every three months, women in the age group of 18-45 years will be given contraceptive injections free of cost at all state-run primary health centres and hospitals in Tamil Nadu.

This contraception injection contains birth control hormone ‘progestogen’ which is safe for women. The injection is a safe and effective means of birth control for three months, said State Family Welfare Director K Jyothi.

Tamil Nadu is the seventh populous state with a population of more than 7.21 Crores. "We have an infant mortality rate of 19 per 1,000 births and maternal mortality rate of 62 per lakh live births. By increasing contraceptive options, we will be able to bring down both these mortalities," said Vijaya Baskar.
