Kevadia, Sept 16: Ahead of the crucial state assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the world’s second biggest dam to the people of Gujarat. On his 67th birthday, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Sardar Sarovar Dam, the most anticipated irrigation project nearly after sixty years. He is also scheduled to attend the concluding session of fortnight-long Narmada Mahotsav where he will address the mammoth gathering organized by the state administration.
 
Spread over 18 lakh hectares of land, world's second-biggest irrigation venture - Sardar Sarovar Dam would resolve the acute problem of the water crisis. A path-breaking project where Narmada water will flow to over 9,000 villages of Gujarat through a canal network developed by Sardar Sarovar Nigam Limited. The 1.2-km-long dam, with the depth of 63 metres has generated near about 4,141 crore units of electricity from its two powerhouses with the capacity of 1,200 MW and 250 MW, respectively.
 
 

According to state officials, neighboring states like Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will share the power generated from Sardar Sarovar dam. With 57 percent Maharashtra would get maximum access to power where Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat will get 27 and 16 percent power respectively. The dam has a storage capacity of 4.73 million cubic metres where the height was amended from 121.92 metres to 138 metres.
