Cairo, September 19: Following the removal of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013, a massive violence erupted in Egypt. A huge number of citizens were charged with various crimes. In the latest mass trial of such cases, forty-three people have been sentenced to life in prison. More than two hundred have been sentenced imprisonment for murder and illegally protesting.

In the trial, 52 other was acquitted along with an Irish student, a high-profile detainee who says he was tortured in custody. He was in prison for more than four years and aimed was tortured badly. He was 17 years old when he was arrested. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar welcomed Halawa's acquittal.

"Today's verdict is long overdue. Ibrahim was arrested as a child for the 'crime' of attending a protest, tortured, and tried facing the death penalty alongside adults in an unfair mass trial," said Maya Foa, director of the human right group who was assisting the Irish teenager.

"For years, these court proceedings - which were designed to punish political dissent - made a mockery of justice. The wider international community - including the EU, which helps to fund Egypt's courts - must also call urgently on Egypt to end its use of patently illegal mass trials," she again said.
