Mumbai, September 24: Coral reef is a beautiful natural wonder which is now endangered due to increasing pollution overfishing, warming, changing ocean chemistry. The survival of Coral reef is highly doubted under emerging circumstances. A recent study reveals globally reefs have a chance of long-term survival if warming is limited to under 2 degree Celsius.

“We are on the doorstep of a world without coral reefs and the only way to avoid this is through the full implementation of the Paris Agreement,” says the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Director General Inger Andersen. “We cannot afford to lose these uniquely rich ecosystems which provide food, livelihoods and coastal protection to 500 million people worldwide.”

To widen the chances of helping coral reefs to survive human race has to take control over pollution, overfishing. The report says economic systems must become sustainable and circular, minimising waste as well as emissions to counter pollution.

“We need urgent global action to curb greenhouse gas emissions if we are to help reefs survive the devastating wave of coral bleaching we have seen over the last three years, and that will further intensify in the future,” says David Obura.

Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals work as a framework for that action. Hence to save the natural wonder Coral Reef World leaders need to follow the frameworks.

 Coral reef and its importance:

Corals, sponges, and seaweeds cover most of the surface of many coral reefs. Coral reefs are the most diverse of all marine ecosystems. Coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine life on the planet. The value of coral reefs has been estimated at 30 billion U.S. dollars and perhaps as much as 172 billion U.S. dollars each year, providing food, protection of shorelines, jobs based on tourism, and even medicines.
