Buddhist Monk-led mob attacked #Rohingya refugee’s camp in Sri Lanka

Colombo, September 27: A mob led by a group of Buddhist monks attacked a United Nations safe house for Rohingya refugees in capital of Sri Lanka yesterday.

Police said, the mob broke down gates, pelted stones and entered the walled multi-storied compound. The monks claimed that the refugees are Muslim terrorists who killed Buddhist monks in Myanmar.

Gunasekara said Rohingya Muslims were arrested by the Navy in April when they tried to illegally enter Sri Lanka and they were found drifting in a boat in Sri Lankan waters. A court had ordered them be kept at a safe location run by the United Nation.

Police said they were going through local media video footage as well as Facebook in the hopes of arresting those who took part in the violence, and the monks who incited them.

According to United Nations’s report, 480000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since violence broke out in Myanmar on 25th of August, increasing its estimate by 45,000 in last two days.

A report by UN agencies and international charities said the change was due in large part to an estimated 35,000 Rohingya moving into two refugee camps who had not been accounted for before.

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar says its security forces are fighting Rohingya militants behind a surge of violence in Rakhine state that began on August 25, and they are doing all they can to avoid harming civilians.
