California, September 27: Twitter is likely to increase its 140-character limit to 280 characters to address users' concerns of restricted space. Twitter is currently testing its plan as it's allowing a small group of users to tweet using 280 characters in various languages.

San Francisco-based Twitter said, the new limit, a major shift for the messaging platform known for its 140-character tweets, aims to address a major cause of frustration for many users. Twitter Chief executive Jack Dorsey said, this is a small change, but a big move for them.

The decision was motivated by research carried out by the social network that showed you can convey double the amount of information per character in languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese than you can in languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.

“Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people Tweeting in English, but it is not for those Tweeting in Japanese,” said Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen in a blogpost.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had introduced 140-character limit on the back of 160-character limit for SMS messages over cell phones. Twitter, which became a public company in 2013, has never reported a profit even though it has built a loyal base of celebrities, journalists and political figures.
