Sport Arbitration Court to hear appeal from 42 Russian athletes banned from Olympics

Moscow, January 10: Recently in a doping-related case International Olympic Committee(IOC) banned many Russian athletes for life. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered 42 appeals filed by Russian athletes against decisions taken by the Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee. The hearing will start on January 22.

"A CAS arbitration procedure has been opened for each athlete," a statement from CAS said. "The procedures are being conducted jointly and a combined hearing is likely to take place in the week of 22 January 2018." The final decision is expected to come out before 31st January.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russian Olympic team from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea over state-sponsored doping row and later IOC banned 11 Russian athletes for life after committing doping offenses at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.

Russia had the top spot on the medal list of Sochi Olympics. But already 13 of their original 33 medals for have been stripped off for cheating. Now they have come down to fourth on the list.
