New Delhi, January 12: The four senior-most judges of Supreme Court Justice J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurien Joseph held a Press Conference on Friday morning. This is first ever Press conference by the sitting judges of the Supreme Court.

The Apex Court judges stated passively that things are not going well with the Supreme Court. They criticised the Chief Justice of India (CJI), saying that they had to approach the media since their issues raised with the CJI was not heard.

"Things less than desirable has happened in the Supreme Court. We tried to collectively persuade the CJI so that he takes remedial measures but our efforts have failed. The four of us are convinced that for the survival of democracy, an impartial judge and judiciary is needed," Justice Chelameswar said.

The Senior Judges categorically said: We are not playing politics....

“Four of us met the Chief Justice of India today morning and raised issues affecting the institution,” Justice Chelameswar said, adding “Unless this institution is preserved, democracy will not survive in this country”.

We tried to persuade Chief Justice of India that certain things are not in order. Unfortunately, we have failed, said Justice Chelameswar in a strongly-worded presser.

"This is the discharge of our debt to the nation. The letter with the issues will be given to the press at the press conference," Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.
