Chennai, January 12: The Tamil Nadu transport union strike which has left commuters in a lot of difficulties for almost 8 days has now been withdrawn by the intervention of the Madras High Court.

The reason for the strike is a failure in negotiation between the unions and Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar regarding a hike in the pay of transport workers. The staff will resume the work from today morning.

The court passed an interim order referring the dispute to arbitration. A special bench headed by Justice S Manikumar appointed former judge of the high court Justice E Padmanabhan as the arbitrator.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions leader A Soundarajan told reporters that the decision to 'temporarily' withdraw the stir was taken in the interest of the people of the state ahead of Pongal festival. He demanded that the arbitrator decide on the wage revision issue within a month.
