New Delhi, January 13: In a major setback to Indian players, The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reduced the charges for international call termination (ITC) from 53 paise to 30 paise, effective from Febuary 1.

In a statement, TRAI said it has reduced the termination charges payable by an International Long Distance Operator to the access provider. TRAI said that the move is aimed at eliminating illegal VOIP gateway business in India.

ITC is what local telcos receive from international operators and the cut will affect revenues of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea Cellular. The new rate will be effective from 1st of next month.

It argued that this was a more important regulatory priority than facilitating the shift of the international incoming traffic from over-the-top (OTT) apps like Whatsapp, Viber and Skype used to make voice and video calls over the internet to carrier route.

Trai will monitor the trends and patterns of incoming international calls and may review the rate from time to time, but did not give a roadmap.
