Thiruvananthapuram, January 13: Again a good move! Kerala becomes India’s 1st state to allow prisoners to donate their organs to their close relatives. According to the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act 2014, Kerala has given a nod to donate the organs on certain conditions.

According to an official release, ‘The prisoners can henceforth donate their organs to close relatives and the government has decided to make necessary amendments in the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act 2014. It was also resolved that the period the prisoner has hospitalised post donation, will be considered as parole and the hospital expenses will be met by the jail department’.

However, the prisoner needs to meet certain conditions for the process to take place. Like, the organ donation can be made by prisoners to their close relatives only. In order to do so, the prisoners will have to first seek permission from the medical board and also from the particular court that prosecuted them.

The release also made it clear of there being ‘no relaxation in prison term’ for the prisoner following the organ donation. The jail authorities will also be responsible for the supervision of the prisoner’s diet regime prescribed by the doctor.
