South Korea to install artificial reefs to prevent illegal Chinese fishing

Seoul, January 13: China’s illegal fishing bothers many countries in the region including South Korea, Japan. To put an end to Chinese overfishing, South Korea will install additional artificial reefs near the western maritime border with North Korea.
As local media reported, Incheon Metropolitan City said it will install artificial reefs around the five northwestern border islands in the Yellow Sea, including Baengnyeong and Daecheong, to prevent illegal trawling by Chinese boats. Since 2013, this metropolitan city with Central has already placed about 800 man-made underwater structures, which range in size from 2 tons to 53.5 tons, in the western sea.
Artificial reefs resemble some features of the natural reef. As well as protecting marine resources, these also act effectively at preventing illegal trawling. China is running out of its own fishing stock. But in order to meet the demand of fish, Chinese fishermen are entering other countries illegally. The total number of Chinese fishing boats sailing on the high seas and in other countries’ coastal areas runs just under 2,500.
