Mahadayi row: Goa government to file contempt plea against Karnataka

Panaji, January 15: Reacting strongly to the alleged construction of a canal by Karnataka government, Goa government has decided to file a contempt petition before the Supreme Court. Speaking to the media, Goa Irrigation Minister Vinod Palyekar on Sunday said that state government has taken serious note of illegitimate move of Karnataka.

 

Describing it as the violation of Apex court’s directives Palyekar informed that state government will take up the matter in the first week of February. The Irrigation minister also mentioned about the photographic evidence of alleged construction work on a canal of a Mahadayi tributary at Kanakumbi in Belagavi district.

According to media reports, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has already conveyed his objection to the Karnataka Chief Minister over the resumption of the work on a canal. Earlier, several reports were surfaced about the alleged attempt of Mahadayi water diversion. On Friday, Palyekar along with a team of officials inspected the "fresh works" allegedly being carried out at Kanakumbi.

Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal constituted by the Central government to address the river water -sharing issue between Goa and Karnataka. Mahadayi river, considered as the lifeline for both goa and Karnataka states originates in Karnataka and meets the Arabian Sea at Panaji in Goa.
