Raksha Mantri clears procurement of assault rifles and carbines to meet immediate requirement of security forces

New Delhi, January 17: With an aim to meet the immediate requirement of the troops deployed along the borders, the Defence Ministry has cleared procurement of more than 72 thousand assault rifles and nearly 94 thousand carbines on a fast track basis.

 

Notably, the Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Raksha Mantri Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday cleared procurement of more than 72 thousand assault rifles and nearly 94 thousand carbines on a fast track basis to meet the immediate requirement of the troops deployed along the borders.

The procurement involves the expenditure of more than three thousand crore rupees. The council also simplified Make-2 procedure for development and manufacturing of defence equipment through the domestic industry. The revised procedure will now allow Ministry of Defence to accept suo moto proposals from the industry and also allow start-ups to develop equipment for armed forces.

Earlier in the month, the Defence Ministry has cleared contracts worth 2,420 crore rupees for the Navy and the Army which includes procurement of P-8I Training Solution and Low-Intensity Conflict Electronic Warfare System.
