South African city Cape Town to reach nightmare “Day Zero” within 90 days

Cape Town, January 19: South African city Cape Town is on the brink of becoming a first major city in the world to run out of water totally. The current water composition indicates the city has approximately 90 days until it runs out of the water. ‘Day Zero’ is approaching soon, the situation in which where the city will be forced to shut off water supplies.

Three years of unprecedented drought in South Africa has pushed the city to such a situation. Almost 40 lakh residents of the citizen are confronting an evil nightmare. Tourism of the city is also getting affected while almost two million tourists flock to Cape Town every year. The sudden population rise has exacerbated the crisis. But still, this is a "once in a millennium" event. No good planning could resist this calamity after three years of drought.

Being strict the city has mandated that every household limit their water consumption to 23 gallons per person per day. But unfortunately, a major portion of citizens and visitors are not meeting the given target. The water usage alert has been raised to the sixth level on the onset of this year.

Dam levels are currently below 30 percent and after it will hit below 13.5 percent the crisis will be turned into a catastrophic one. The city is predicted to reach Day Zero on April 21.

The 2015 El-Nino is being held responsible for the situation though after el-Nino also the drought situation continued. With the changing climate, it is believed that South Africa will receive less and less rain. Hence, the city has to make new plans to confront the looming crisis.
