Dense fog interrupts rail traffic in North India

New Delhi, January 19: The rail and road traffic in North India has come to a standstill following severe fog and intense cold wave. Most of the Delhi-NCR region was covered with a dense layer of fog. 

The intensity of fog is moreover East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Sub Himalayan West Bengal. Parts of Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh also witnessed moderate to dense fog during the past day.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature has been recorded to be 27° Celsius and a minimum of 8° Celsius.

Trains running across noth, northwest and eastern India were affected by dense fog. These include places in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and isolated places over Punjab and Haryana. At 25 metres, the lowest visibility was observed in UP's Bahraich and Gorakhpur, while Amritsar, Hisar and Patna had visibility at 50 metres. Visibility in Delhi was lower than 200 metres.

Earlier on Thursday, a total of 38 trains were delayed, 7 rescheduled and 15 cancelled due to the inclement weather.

A low danger avalanche warning issued for some areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) advisory said, people are advised not to venture to avalanche prone slopes or areas during the warning period. It further said that fresh snowfall has occurred at a few places in Jammu and Kashmir. Banihal Top had received light snow while Gulmarg got 6 and Drass 8 centimetres of snow.
