California, January 20: Over alleged Russian meddling in 2016 US Presidential election controversy, Twitter faced heavy criticism from US Congress. Now, Twitter is sending emails to 677,775 people in the US to let them know that they fell into “Russian Propaganda”.

Twitter missed the deadline set by Congress to provide information on Russia backed meddling. On Friday, it published a post regarding the review of election controversy. The company identified and suspended a number of accounts that were potentially connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization known as the Internet Research Agency (IRA).

“Consistent with our commitment to transparency, we are emailing notifications to 677,775 people in the United States who followed one of these accounts or retweeted or liked a Tweet from these accounts during the election period,” Twitter said in the post.

Meanwhile, Twitter has identified an additional 1,062 accounts associated with the IRA. Much expectedly, it suspended all of these accounts for Terms of Service violations, primarily spam, and all but a few accounts, which were restored to legitimate users, remain suspended. At the request of congressional investigators, they are also sharing those account handles with Congress. Moreover, it suggested US president Trump’s Twitter account engaged with bots hundreds of times

The controversy is regarding Russia’s inclination towards US President Trump and the fake accounts trying to influence voters in favour of him. However, Trump and Russia both denied such allegation strongly. Trump alleged recently this is staining US-Russia relation.
