Judiciary to go fast track; revises its pending cases under ‘Nyaya Mitra’ initiative

New Delhi, January 23: A country comprises of three faces which includes Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. While legislature and executive section is leaving no stones unturned for the people to make things easy and accessible the Judiciary also has made law forceful and the execution of these laws are effective and generous. Although the country is facing numerous issues like some are dealing with health issues, educational problems, some are still waiting for a hearing of their pending cases. The wait is over.

 

A special initiative called as ‘Nyaya Mitra’ has been introduced to reduce the number of cases pending for over 10 years. Almost 227 districts from 16 states have been taken into surveillance with highest number of such cases which have been identified under this initiative. This initiative was taken into action by Minister of Law & Justice and Electronics & IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad who appealed all those involved in the delivery of justice to join hands in improving the system to ensure that assistance is available to every citizen irrespective of his socio-economic position. Under Nyaya Mitra these special cases will be taken into immediate action and through coordination speedy disposal of these pending cases will take place.

 

Retired judicial and executive officers who have legal experience have been appointed in this initiative and the project would be operated out of District Facilitation Centres. This was introduced with the main framework of giving speedy recovery to the pending cases for 10 long years. Nyaya Mitra’s responsibilities would include among others assistance to litigants who are suffering due to delay in investigations or trial, by actively identifying such cases through the National Judicial Data Grid, providing legal advice and connecting litigants other government agencies and civil society organizations.

The Minister also discussed the issue of heavy pendency of cases in courts across the country. it was noted that at present, more than 2.4 crore cases are pending in the district and lower judiciary, of which nearly 10% are more than 10 years old. They have also called for collective action and efforts in remedying this situation.

This initiative would be launched in 227 districts including 27 districts from North East and Jammu & Kashmir and 200 districts from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, Gujarat, and West Bengal etc.
