Melbourne, January 24: Star Indian shuttler Rohan Bopanna with his Hungarian partner Timea Babos on Tuesday swiftly entered into the mixed doubles semifinals at the Australian Open on Wednesday which is being held in Melbourne.
Notably, Rohan Bopanna and his Hungarian partner Timea Babos registered an emphatic victory over Colombian Juan Sebastian Cabal and Abigail Spears of USA by 6-4, 7-6 (5) in a match that lasted for one hour and 15 minutes. However, it was a hard-fought win for Bopanna and Timea Babos as Cabal and Spears had the better break point conversion rate.
But Bopanna and Babos kept themselves calm and steady to lead throughout the match and managed to score more points in both their first and second sets to bag the victory. In the end the Indo-Hungarian duo won 73 points as against their rivals 68.
Further, Bopanna and Babos will take on the winners of the other quarter-final between Australian duo of Storm Sanders and Marc Polmans and Spanish-Brazilian combination of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Marcelo Demoliner in the semi-finals.
Earlier, in the tournament, Rohan Bopanna and his duo Timea Babos defeated USA's Vania King and Croatia's Franko Skugor by 6-4, 6-4 to advance into quarter finals. Interestingly, Bopanna had reached the quarterfinals at all the four Slams last year, losing three and winning only at the French Open, where he won the title with his then partner Gabriela Dabrowski.
Importantly, Rohan Bopanna is now the only Indian in title contention at Melbourne Park after Leander Paes, Purav Raja, Divij Sharan and Bopanna himself were defeated in the third round of the men's doubles.
