Padma Shri to Atithis: India felicitates one individual from each ASEAN country with fourth highest civilian award

New Delhi, January 27: As a symbolic gesture of India ASEAN bonding and on occasion of silver jubilee of India ASEAN partnership and our Republic Day, PM Narendra Modi announced Padma Shri award for one individual from each ASEAN country. It is an unprecedented move to promote India's ties with the 10-member bloc.

 

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan. Awarded by the Government of India, it is announced every year on India's Republic Day.

This decision to honor one achiever from each country of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was taken as India-ASEAN Commemorative Summit started in New Delhi on Thursday.

From Cambodia, I Nyoman Nuarta from Indonesia, Bounlap Keokangna from Laos, Datuk Ramli Bin Ibraham from Malaysia, Myanmar’s Dr. Thant Myint-U, Jose Ma Joey Concepcion III from the Philippines, Singapore’s Tommy Koh, Somdet Phra Ariya Wongsa Khottayan from Thailand and Nguyen Tien Thien from Vietnam.

Achievers were selected on the basis of their social works, public affairs, trade and industry, and arts.

 

ASEAN countries’ dignitaries were the guests invited for the historic Republic Day Parade. On this occasion, Ministry of External Affairs tweeted The Ministry of External Affairs extends its warm wishes to all on the 69th Republic Day. Republic Day 2018 would always be remembered as a historic day when all 10 ASEAN HoS/HoGs joined us in the celebrations.
