Deadly attack as gunmen sprayed bullets on civilians, killing 14 people in Brazil

Ceara, January 28: It was sadly not a joyful day for the people of northeastern Brazilian City of Fortaleza as a gunmen opened fire at the civilians at the party of a nightclub killing atleast 14 people including eight women.


 

The scene took place at the outskirts of the popular tourist city, Fortaleza. The police arrived at midnight taking into custody one of the suspects. According to the officials the armed men stepped out of the vehicle and spurted the partygoers with bullets. The slaying was ought to be a planned attempt by the gunmen.

The authorities reported that there were three cars full of armed men arrived at the Forro do Gago club at 12.30am and fired at the front of the building. Further they added that the motive was not yet known, and they were investigating whether it was related to a conflict between drug gangs.

This is not the first time such attack has taken place in the country. Brazil set a record with more than 61,000 homicides in 2016, the last year for which statistics are available. The country has an average of seven homicides per hour, and 29.7 per every 100,000 residents annually, according to a research group. A woman is killed in Brazil every two hours, the research group reports. In 2016, 4,606 women were killed.

Northeastern Brazil has some of the highest homicide rates in the country, according to the group. The state of Ceara, where the killings occurred, had 3,334 homicides in 2016. The northeastern Brazilian state of Ceara has one of the country's highest levels of violence and homicides, often blamed on the gangs. The governor of the state, Camilo Santana, said 82% of the homicides that were recorded in December of last year were due to a conflict between factions of drug traffickers.

Last year, there were 5,114 murders in Ceara, a 50% rise from 2016. It was the highest toll since the state started releasing the data in 2013. A 2015 nightclub shooting, which killed 11 people, mostly teenagers, was previously Ceara's deadliest mass shooting on record.
