Britain must accept rules during Brexit transition: EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier

Brussels, January 30: Thorns between Britain and EU are increasing with the time flow, as the chief Brexit negotiator for the European Union, Michel Barnier has warned Britain it would have to accept all EU laws, including new regulations, and the supremacy of the European Court of Justice for the duration of any transition period.

He also stressed that Britain would have no decision-making power in the EU during the transition, which the bloc wants to run for 21 months - from March 29, 2019, when Britain leaves, until the end of 2020.

Barnier also said the UK would only be able to attend meetings on a "limited, exceptional, case by case basis".

His comments come as the UK and the EU get ready to get back to the negotiating table to move on to the second phase, including the transition arrangements and a potential free trade agreement.

Britain is set to leave the bloc on March 29, 2019, but the negotiations must be wrapped up in less than a year to leave parliaments time to ratify the agreement.

Recently Britain officially declared that it is the world’s sixth strongest economy. Since many years Britain was in the top five economies of the world but France beat Britain which put the country in the sixth position.
