Sucre, January 31: Guinness Records has announced Bolivia's cable car system which connects La Paz and El Alto will be included in its 2018 list as the largest cable car system in the world.

Operated by the state-run Mi Teleferico ("My Cable Car") company, the system first opened for service back in 2014, as part of an initiative by leftist president Evo Morales to ease notorious gridlock in La Paz.

With a height of 3,600 (11,811 feet) to 4,000 km (13,123 feet), the system connects a total of 30 km (19 miles). The silent, electrically powered cable cars with built-in wifi and panoramic views of the Andes might make transport systems in other metropolises look outdated. Though cities such as Colombia's Medellin also boast cable car lines, none are as extensive.

The system currently counts 159,000 passengers a day, with the goal of 300,000 when all the stations are fully built.

The Andean city of 1.8 million has long struggled with chaotic transport. Minibuses and taxis with hand-written signs in their windscreens pick up passengers randomly along winding, congested routes.
