Ready to share Mahadayi water with Karnataka: CM Manohar Parrikar

Panaji, January 4: For the first time, clarifying on the long pending and much hyped Mahadayi river controversy between Karnataka and Goa, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said that under any condition, Karnataka will get its share of water from Mahadayi basin.

Speaking to the media, Parrikar slammed opposition and media for unnecessary dragging him into unnecessary controversy. Lashing out heavily at critics, Parrikar stated that Mahadayi river was not about the sharing of water but related to the diversion of water from the basin.

Elaborating the details, the Chief Minister minister maintained that one cannot divert the water from a deficit basin to another basin. He further added that state government has already cleared its stand before Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal with substantial documents.

When asked about the technical and legal glitches, Parrikar asserted that Karnataka cannot take or divert water from Mahadayi basin to another basin. The Chief Minister underlined that they have to use it for drinking purposes or utilize it within the basin.

Mahadayi river, considered as the lifeline for both goa and Karnataka states originates in Karnataka and meets the Arabian Sea at Panaji in Goa. Around 52 km of the river runs through Goa km through Karnataka and 16 km through Maharashtra.
