In the name of reforms, opposition rallied for stalling the Triple talaq bill

New Delhi, January 4: The triple talaq bill is likely to be deferred to the next parliament session as the opposition build up pressure on sending the bill to a select committee. After a noisy scene in the Rajya Sabha today, the house has been adjourned till Friday.

Arguing for the examination of bill by the select committee, leader of opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the bill, in current form, is against the interest of muslim women. “Who will provide for the compensation of women and her children if her husband is in jail,” he contended.

TMC MP Derek O Brien says 'its clear that this side (Opposition) wants to empower women, and you(Govt) stand exposed'.

Reacting to the remarks, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, “Opposition stands exposed in RS. For the past 2 days, repeatedly it has been said that if there are any issues need to be spoken on triple talaq bill, those issues need to be put out on the floor of the House. Why is Congress-led opposition running away from discussion?”

“Double standards of Congress-led opposition are exposed today and I think it is a shame on them that they are trying to obstruct this path of justice for Indian Muslim women,” Smriti Irani said.

As both sides failed to arrive at any solution, the Opposition MPs took to the aisles and started protest, after which Deputy Chairperson PJ Kurien adjourned the proceedings till Friday.

The logjam over legislation to criminalise instant triple talaq, which was moved in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday amid uproar by the Opposition members, continued as both the government and opposition could not arrive at any consensus. The current winter session of Parliament is slated to hold sittings till Friday.
