Hong Kong, January 4: The world’s longest sea bridge HongKong-Macau-Zhuhai is ready for the Chinese to roll out their vehicles on it. The grand lighting, fireworks on the 55 kms long bridge filled the Chinese eyes with colors and excitement as the bridge will cut three hours journey to just 30 mins.

It has taken China 14 years to plan and construct the enormous structure. The state paper also said the main section of the bridge is now ready for traffic. The main structure measures 29.6 kilometres, consisting of a 22.9-km bridge section and 6.7-km underground tunnel. The bridge's total length is 55 kilometres.

In order to provide long-term relief of traffic congestion, various projects were approved and endorsed. Hong Kong's government and the relevant Chinese authorities had identified the need to open new border crossings. At the third meeting of the China/Hong Kong Conference on the Co-ordination of Major Infrastructure Projects (the Conference) held on 20 September 2002, it was agreed that a joint study should be conducted on the transport linkage between Hong Kong and Pearl River West.

An important study was completed by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Hong Kong Government on the transport linkage between Hong Kong and the western bank of the Pearl River Delta. The study points out that a bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau will provide significant macro socio-economic benefits for the Greater Pearl River Delta Region including Hong Kong.
