Cape Town, January 5: A city still being located near two oceans is witnessing worst water crisis of the decade. Cape Town, located only a stone's throw away from both the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, is on the verge of being water broke soon. From the first day of this year, level 6 water restrictions have come into effect.
The new restriction holds water usage greater than 10 500 liters a month per household as excessive. Water management devices will be installed in such households of the city. All the steps are being taken to avoid day zero, the day on which Cape Town might be the first major city in the world to run out of the water. Insufficient rainfall and fast declining dam levels have led to the current drought in Cape Town.
The world should take a lesson from Cape Town. A recent study has shown if the temperature rises even by 2 degrees more, we will live in a world in which one-third of the land is filled with desserts. More than 1.5 billion people will live in a more arid region while drought and wildfires will be a more common phenomenon. But from politicians, policymakers to common mass, no one seems much bothered about the problem. If Cape Town does not make us realize the crisis, be ready to live in a dessert!
