New Delhi, January 5: Pregnancy is a crucial stage in a women’s life. To curb the issue of maternal deaths and take care of pregnant women, an initiative was started to assure comprehensive and quality antenatal care free of cost for women on every 9th of every month. This has ensured that around 1 crore of women have been informed about the diet and maternal care health. The official authorities of health department are ensuring each and every pregnant women get a complete checkup and available facilities.

The initiative was started with the aim to provide assistance to women in rural areas who have less knowledge about taking care at the initial stages of pregnancy. Developing strategies for generating awareness is the main aim of the initiative. The program offers group counseling to pregnant women for diet, sleep, regular ANC checkup, institutional delivery, breast feeding, contraceptives etc.

India has made considerable progress in the reduction of maternal and infant mortality, every year approximately 44000 women still die due to pregnancy-related causes and approximately 6.6 lakh infants die within the first 28 days of life. The numbers of mothers dying per 100,000 live births are on a decline, but still about five women die every hour in India from complications developed during childbirth.

Many of these deaths are preventable and many lives can be saved if quality care is provided to pregnant women during their antenatal period and high risk factors such as severe anemia, pregnancy-induced hypertension etc. are detected on time and managed well.

Such schemes and programs are important to create awareness especially in rural areas. The people are not much accustomed with the facilities of hospitals. Pregnant women face many issues because their delivery is either done at home and therefore proper measures should be implemented. Most of the maternal deaths in India can be prevented. Many are due to a lack of appropriate care during pregnancy and childbirth and to inadequate services for identifying and managing complications.

This initiative has proved as a boon for pregnant woman because the efforts taken by the Government are impeccable. It has proved to be a beneficiary program as the women are made aware about taking proper measures. This will definetely reduce the rate of death in pregnant woman in India.
