CM Sonowal calls on for investments as Assam set to host 1st ever Global Investors’ Summit

Chennai, January 9: Calling on companies for investments Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal addressed a conference organised in Chennai as part of the Assam’s 1st ever Global Investors’ Summit. CM Sonowal made a strong pitch for investment in the state focusing on sugar, chemicals, fast-moving consumer goods companies based in Tamil Nadu. 

"The Assam government is putting emphasis on creating a business-friendly environment and bringing investments to the state. New policies, reforms, establishing new units of the industry by leading brands have given new vibrancy to the industrial scene of the state," CM Sonowal said, adding that the Act East Policy has brought the Northeast from a corner to the centre of India's interaction with Southeast Asia.

 

On Sunday, Sonowal had held a similar roadshow in Singapore. Earlier, he had held road shows in Calcutta, New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. The roadshow aims at promoting Advantage Assam: Global Investors' Summit 2018 to be held here on February 3 and 4.

 

CM Sarbananda Sonowal invited industrialists from Tamil Nadu to invest in the state, saying his government has announced key initiatives to boost trade, including the “Act East Policy”.

1st ever Global Investors’ Summit scheduled will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi next month in Guwahati. He said Modi had termed the north-east region as the new engine of India’s growth.

CM added that his government has succeeded in bringing in investments worth about Rs 7,000 Crore to the state since his government came to power.

“A new startup policy supporting young entrepreneurs has been put in place. We have also announced a very attractive IT-enabled services policy and a biotechnology policy,” CM Sonowal said.

Detailing other initiatives taken up by the government, he said steps have been taken up to upgrade Guwahati airport as an international airport, mainly connecting the South-East Asian countries. Work for the construction of new terminal and expansion of the airport has already begun, he added.

Noting that the government has taken steps to give Guwahati a new global identity, the chief minister said, “We are planning to develop Guwahati as a new city with modern facilities to boost economic and commercial ties between India and ASEAN countries”.
